Taverns played an important role in not only Dover, but all of Early American History. They served as a place for rest, entertainment, refreshment, politics, and business. They were the birthplace of revolution as well as the Industrial Age. In Dover, taverns like the Dame Tibbetts Tavern or Nathaniel Ela’s Tavern saw all walks of life patronage their establishments. Join Executive Director of the Woodman Museum, Jonathan Nichols, for a presentation on their 2025 Exhibition, "For the Refreshment of Strangers: Taverns of Historic Dover", as well as an overview of the history of several local taverns and their important role in Early American society.
